Diana Henry- Sensory Processing Measure (SPM)

Founder and President of Henry Occupational Therapy Services
Look at www.ateachabout.com

The SPM was developed with the intention to include praxis and encourage team communication. Ideas can come from even the minor interactions on a daily basis and that maybe all that is needed to change the direction of the course of treatment.

Each person filling out the forms must know the child for a month or more. The forms go to the classroom and home, art, bus, cafeteria, music, PE and recess -

The forms have user friendly language and are easy to use. They are also quick to answer.

The SPM has been tested and are standardize to norms of the ages 5 to 12 at this time. They are working on an adolescent and preschool test as well.

The scoring sheets provide the opportunity for visual graphs for which the results fit into three easily understood categories which make it straightforward weather a problem exists or not.

The form is broken down into the senses of vision/hearing/touch/taste & smell/body awareness and balance. The SPM also includes social participation and praxis through planning and ideas.

The home vs the school-

Sample Questions
Home

Works as part of a team; is helpful with others  vs   plays with friends cooperatively

The SPM uses a 4 point scale instead of 5 because - this provides less chance of picking neutral answer-makes it closer to one side then the other.

The validity will be hurt with unanswered questions -Always stress the raters should answer all questions.

The SPM will help answer the question: Is the behavior sensory driven?

Diana provided case Studies: we observed behavior through videos and we able to witness interventions were working across settings.

The SPM took into consideration the Response to intervention -RtI. The SPM can be used as a pretest and post test- before and after Tx to measure if intervention was working.

Diana stated and showed the manual that will explain the definitions of what they based their decisions on. The manual also has the concepts, tips to help with integration, 6 case studies, text development, and pyschometics.

The SPM can be used for Global/Top down/bottom up -interpretation strategies What is different from other sensory integration measurements? The difference is the inclusion of Ideation- the ability to form a mental image of a novel task and motor planning- the ability to carry out a series of movements in proper sequence.

Also over-responsivity or under-responsivity is demonstrated with the SPM.

The SPM scales are based on SI theory not medical diagnosis classification Shows quantification for Sensory Processing Disorders.

The cost for the kit is $149. The start up kit comes a CD for reproducible documents on all except -home and School.

The home and school forms can be ordered. There are 25 forms for $40.00  and a discount for buying in bulk for refills. This can be done through southpaw.

A suggestion was made that you should create a tracking form of sheets given out.

My Feelings - I think this would provide a visual assistance to help validate OT as an intervention that assists children with praxis as well as self regulation. Since it is standardized and understandable to layman it is easy to use and provides accountable proof of certain sensory needs.
